1. Tool Introduction
This online PDF Splitter is designed for multi-range splitting. Simply put, it can split a multi-page PDF file into several independent PDF files at once according to the multiple page ranges you specify, and automatically package them into a ZIP archive for easy download.
It’s useful in many daily scenarios, such as:
- If you have a 200-page e-book and only need pages 1-30, 50-80, and 150-170, this tool can split them into 3 separate files for easy viewing;
- When dealing with batches of invoices or contracts, you only need to extract a few pages for filing instead of saving the entire file, making filing more organized.
2. Step-by-Step Guide (Easy to Follow)
Step 1: Upload Your PDF File
After opening the tool, click the 「Select File」 button to choose the PDF file you want to split from your computer. Once uploaded, the tool will automatically display the following information for your reference:
- Name of the uploaded PDF file
- File size (shown in KB or MB, so you can check if the file is too large)
- Total number of pages in the PDF
In addition, the tool will automatically check if the PDF is encrypted. If it is, you will be prompted to decrypt it first before splitting.
Step 2: Add Splitting Ranges
The tool will default to one splitting range, which includes two input boxes for the start page and end page.
If you need to split the PDF into multiple parts (e.g., 3 separate files), click the 「+ Add Splitting Range」 button to add a new range. Each range includes:
- 「Start Page」 input box: Enter the starting page number of the range you want to split
- 「End Page」 input box: Enter the ending page number of the range you want to split
- 「Delete」 button: Click this to remove a range if you don’t need it (Note: The delete button for the first range is hidden to ensure at least one range is retained to avoid accidental operation).
Please note the following rules when entering page numbers to avoid errors:
- All page numbers must be positive integers. The start page cannot be less than 1, and the end page cannot exceed the total number of pages of the PDF, otherwise splitting will fail.
- The start page must be less than or equal to the end page (e.g., entering start page 5 and end page 3 is invalid).
- Page ranges can overlap. For example, you can split pages 1-5 and 3-7 at the same time. The tool will not automatically remove duplicates or prompt you about the overlap; it will extract pages exactly as you specify, which can meet some special needs.
Step 3: Start Splitting
After confirming all splitting ranges are correct, click the 「Start Splitting and Download (ZIP)」 button.
Once clicked, the tool will extract pages corresponding to each range in the order you added them and generate new PDF files. The real-time progress will be displayed at the bottom of the page, such as “Splitting (2/3): Extracting pages 4-9”, so you can clearly see the progress.
Step 4: Download the Result
After splitting is complete, the tool will automatically package all the generated PDF files into a single ZIP archive, so you don’t need to package them manually.
A download button will appear on the page; click it to save the ZIP archive to your computer.
The naming rule for files in the ZIP archive is “OriginalFileName_pStart-End.pdf”. For example, if the original file is named “Contract.pdf” and you split pages 2-5, the generated file will be named “Contract_p2-5.pdf”, making it easy to identify which pages each file contains.
3. Notes (Must Read to Avoid Issues)
- Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed directly: If your PDF is protected with an open password, the tool will prompt “Please decrypt the PDF first using the PDF Password Remover tool before splitting”. In this case, use the 「PDF Password Remover」 tool in our tool suite to decrypt the file first, then come back to split it.
- Tips for large files: If the PDF file is larger than 100MB or has more than 500 pages, the browser’s memory usage will increase, and the splitting speed may be slower. Please be patient and do not close the page halfway.
- Overlapping page ranges: As mentioned earlier, the tool does not restrict overlapping page ranges. For example, if you split pages 1-10 and 5-15 at the same time, both files will include pages 5-10. This is not a tool error but normal operation; use it as needed.
- Result format: Whether you add one or multiple splitting ranges, the tool will always output a ZIP archive (even if it contains only one PDF file). If you want to download a single PDF file, simply unzip the ZIP archive.
4. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Can I split a single page? For example, only page 3?
A: Yes, you can. Just enter 3 for both the start page and end page, then click Split to extract page 3 as a separate PDF file.
Q2: Can I customize the order of the split files?
A: Yes. The tool generates files in the order you added the ranges (from top to bottom). If you want to adjust the order, delete the unwanted ranges and re-add them in your desired order.
Q3: Will the tool upload my PDF file to a server? I’m worried about privacy leakage.
A: No, it won’t. All splitting operations are completed locally in your browser using the PDF.js library. The file remains on your computer at all times and will not be uploaded to any server. You can use it with confidence, as it effectively protects your document privacy.
Q4: What’s the maximum number of splitting ranges I can add?
A: There is no hard limit, but we recommend adding no more than 20 ranges. Adding too many ranges will take up more browser memory, which may affect splitting speed or cause lag. Add ranges as needed—each range corresponds to one output file.
Q5: Will the quality of the split PDF files decrease?
A: No, it won’t. This tool uses the pdf-lib library to split pages with lossless copying. The original text, vector graphics, and clarity will be fully retained, just like the original file.
